Are you looking for something you can do with your family during the “dog days of winter”? Snow Days in Chicago provides an outdoor environment with family entertainment. Snow Days Chicago is a three-day winter festival hosted by the Mayor’s office of special events and the City of Chicago.
It is held in Grant Park on Michigan Avenue in the Spirit of Music Garden. Activities commence on Friday evening and continue throughout the weekend with the final event held on Sunday. Public transportation and accommodations are located nearby to allow families to enjoy the entire weekend at the festival. Admission is free with hot beverages and food readily available for purchase.
Festival Activities on snow days in Chicago
Here are a few of the main events scheduled for visitors.
Snow Sculpting
The snow sculpting event is coordinated by Snow Visions, Inc. and is arguably the most popular event at the festival. Fifteen professional teams participate by carving their designs and placing them on display. Spectators may then view and join in the event by voting for their favorite sculpture.
There will also be an opportunity for the up-and-coming artists of Chicago to show their artistic abilities as well. This is accomplished with twelve high school teams participating in the sculpting event. Their completed work will also be on exhibit at the event.
Igloo Activities
The activities igloo is a fun, interactive area prepared specifically with the children of Chicago in mind. This section of Snow Days in Chicago will have arts and crafts, live music by recognizable stations such as Radio Disney, and live storytelling. The activities at the igloo will also educate the children about the importance of holiday events of the month. Past festivals have featured President’s Day, Black History Month, and Valentine’s Day.
Snowboard Rail Jam
Chicago’s Raging Buffalo Snowboard USASA Team provides the entertainment at the snowboard rail jam event. Families and sports enthusiasts will enjoy watching this competition progress. Day one will involve practice sessions and qualifiers for the participants. Visitors can join the audience in watching the semi-finals on day two. The finals and crowning of the winner will wrap up day three. Snow Days in Chicago provides a full-size rail and ramp for this event.
Dog Sled Racing
This event is known to draw a crowd of Chicago’s animal lovers. Siberian Huskies are the center of attention in this event. Spectators watch as Huskies run snow-covered laps around the park, guided by the Green Valley Dog Drivers. The animals are well trained and friendly. At the conclusion of the event, the audience is invited to take a closer look and pet the animals.
Fun for the Entire Family
Snow Days in Chicago is warming up to be an inexpensive option for family fun. Parents and kids alike will find activities that highlight the best of winter in Chicago.
