How to fall snowboarding: Backside

When you are riding backside, your back is facing uphill, hence backside. Breaking your wrists when falling in this way is very easy and for that reason, it is very important to protect your wrists and arms when falling backside.

When you are about to fall, you first have to cross your arms in front of your chest. Once you did this, you will have to bend your knees. Now you are ready to fall. Try to land on your butt first for the first impact so your back doesn’t get hurt. Then you will notice that you slowly fall on your back, don’t be scared because this won’t hurt if done correctly.

The thought of falling frontside can be scary for most beginners. The thought of falling face-first into icy parts of the slope can be horrifying. That’s why it’s very important to learn how to protect your face when falling frontside.

The first step before falling frontside is bending your knees. This is very important to remember as this will reduce the impact. The next step is to put your elbows at a 90-degree angle so that your forearms are in front of your chest in a way that they can break your fall.

Now you are ready to fall, the falling can start. You fall on your knees to break the first impact, then your forearms have to brace for the remaining impact. This may hurt a little bit but if done correctly, you won’t break anything or get any bruises.

You now know how to fall both frontside and backside. The next logical step would be to know how to stand up after falling. The easiest and most straightforward way would be to get someone to help you stand up but this takes time and is for lazy people.

The easiest way to stand up is when laying frontside. You dig your frontside edge into the snow and push yourself up with your hands and you are ready to go. Unfortunately, you can also fall backside, and standing up from this side may be more difficult for some.

The most straightforward way to stand up from the backside is to dig your heelside edge into the snow and move your butt as close as possible to your board and then in one go push yourself up with your hands. If you are unable to do this, there are a few tricks to help you.

The first trick would be to grab the front side of your board with your non-dominant hand and push yourself up with one hand, this may seem more difficult at first glance but it is way easier, trust me. The second trick would be to roll to your front side and stand up in this way. To do this, you want to lay sideways and try to roll sideways by digging your elbow into the snow and using your frontside or backside for momentum.
